| Wawarsing is a rural area of the beautiful Hudson Valley, abundant in natural splendor. The town borders the Catskill State Park and the Shawangunk range at the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. The central portion lies in the Rondout Valley, complete with winding streams, fertile farms and country homes. The name "Wawarsing" is a Native American term meaning "blackbird's nest," certainly a reflection of the natural element that makes the area so spectacular. One of its most spectacular attractions is Sam's Point Preserve, formerly Ice Caves Mountain, in the western part of the Shawangunk Ridge. A treasure of the area, you can hike through the dwarf pine forest ecosystem and then crawl into ice caves, cooling you off in the summer after your mountain adventure. Atop the Shawangunk Ridge sits the Hamlet of Cragsmoor with it's wooded, rustic ambiance. Visit the Old Stone Church or tour |
